The Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Tennessee Democratic Candidates

Posted on July 2, 2008 at 8:55 am

Ilissa Gold shares some thoughts on the Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate in the wake of a new poll showing “undecided” in the lead:

It’s a scenario that speaks to both candidates’ strengths, and to their weaknesses. My impartial assessment of this primary is that while Padgett seems to have the more organized ground game, Tuke has the better track record on fundraising. Ideally, you’d have both in a candidate–one who could go to all 95 counties and still have enough money left to take on an incumbent with more than $3 million cash on hand. So honestly, your guess is as good as mine as to who wins this one.

In their email, Chao claims to have listed Leonard Ladner first. What is the likelihood of that? In a race where nobody knows who anybody is, Ladner should have gotten a fair percentage just for being at the top of the list. In a sample of 800 random voters (even Democratic primary voters), I seriously doubt that Tuke even has 32% name recognition. Nobody I’ve talked to has even really known who either Tuke or Padgett are, and even people whom I talk to regularly about the race (like my father) can get their names right (”How’s that primary between Pigeon and Tooks going?”).

I can hear the pollsters’ question now: “In the Democratic primary race, will you vote for decorated Marine veteran Bob Tuke, endorsed by General Wesley Clark and former Sen. Max Cleland, former lowly county official Mike Padgett, or one of those other guys?”
