Phil Bredesen Is Not An African American Or A Woman

While “not an African-American or a woman,” Bredesen said he was “looking across a little bit of a chasm” among conservative-leaning Tennesseans because “I came from the wrong side of the Mason-Dixon line, was a big-city mayor - those sorts of things.”

The first step toward winning over a majority of Tennesseans politically, he said, is “getting yourself certified” as acceptable to average voters including “construction workers and people in the small towns” by showing an understanding of their concerns.

“Once you get certified, I think they listen to you on issues,” he said, bringing the candidate to the second step of gaining voter support. He contended that Obama has “tremendous” appeal and can accomplish both steps in Tennessee and elsewhere.
