Like Bob Casey All Over Again

In 1992, it was pro-life Democrats who took a hit from the national party at their convention by being refused a primetime slot for one of their best known spokesman. Now, it’s Southern Dems who are taking a hit.

Fried foods are banned at this year’s convention in Denver:

As part of the effort to make the 2008 national convention the greenest ever, the Democrats’ catering guidelines include one that strikes at the heart of Southern cuisine: No fried food.

No fried chicken. No fried catfish. No fried green tomatoes. No fried okra. No fried anything.

The Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include “at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white.”

“It’s the new patriotism,” says Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the driving force behind the greening of the Democratic convention.

But having lost all but three of the last 10 presidential elections — and almost disappearing from the South as a presidential party — you would think the Democrats would have bigger fish to fr … uh, make that — bake.

Dems want to control how people manage their own health? What is next, banning candidates who smoke? Oh, wait…?

I think the new rules are ridiculous, but I don’t think it was a knock against Southern Culture…we like our fried fatty foods up north too.

Er, no, that’s the Republicans trying to ban birth control, abortion, pornography, television programs and movies they don’t like, teaching evolution in schools, legislating morality at every turn, etc.

Banning fried foods from the convention is hardly the same as banning fried foods from the NATION. Geez, that takes a huge leap. At the convention Dems are leading by example, you know, all that personal responsibility stuff you cons love to harp on about. But of course your first thought is “they’re gonna take my KFC if they get elected!” Man you folks are wound a tad too tight.

And I’m not sure that setting guidelines in a catering policy (which to me sounds like deciding what the DNC is willing to pay for?) equates to “banning”.
