It Takes A Beating To Raise Patriotism

Posted on June 20, 2008 at 8:15 am

In remarks earlier this year, John McCain seems to undermine attacks, such as our own Tennessee GOP’s, on Michelle Obama for her comment that for “the first time in her adult life” she was proud of her country. McCain, in the above video, seems to mouth similar sentiments saying that he “didn’t really love America until [he] was deprived of her company.”

What do you think? Same? Different?

Certainly going to another country, or worse, being subjected to the lack of freedom in one, will make you appreciate what we have here.

But this sort of statement smacks of McCain’s typical “love it or leave it” sentiment, along with his militantly nationalist tendency (which I guess is more like “love it or else”). Instead of a Kennedy-esque hope for how we can make our country even better, this stance takes the lower road of fear/complacency: “look how bad it is everywhere else!”

Okay, let me get this straight.

Bill Hobbs hears Michelle Obama’s comments and goes out and shoots a very amateurish video from people like Bob Pope (good choice there, Bill) who say, in effect, “I’ve ALWAYS loved my country.”

Now, they discover the candidate THEY’RE supporting CAN’T say the same thing…?

Well, I’m waiting for the video in which B-Ho dresses up like Emily Litella and says “oh….never mind.”
