That Pronoun Is Marxist

Posted on June 10, 2008 at 8:53 am

Glen Dean argues that the Obama motto “Yes, We Can” is inherently Marxist:

When Barack and other neo-Marxists use words like “we”, what they are talking about requires coercion. In other words, whether you want to be a part of the “we” or not, you are going to, thanks to the point of a gun.

A conservative approach would be to empower the individual and to look at each individual and say “Yes you can.”

Collectivism is the enemy of freedom because it goes against human nature, and anytime something goes against human nature, force is required to implement it. That’s why the notion of a left wing libertarian is foolish. You can’t support big government and also support individual rights. It just doesn’t work that way.

Good Lord, this is “wing nut” commentary at its finest.

Only in Tennessee is the Cold War still being fought.

The motto on the Great Seal of the United States says “E Pluribus Unum”, which roughly translated means “Out of many, one.” By Glen’s logic, this too would be Marxist. Why does America hate freedom?

Mr. Dean has truly outdone Evel Knievel in terms of making great leaps.

Using his salted and roasted logic, I’m sure Glen would consider Adam Smith a Marxist for calling one of his most prominent works “The Wealth of Nations” as opposed to “The Wealth of Individuals.”

Collective pronoun = collective farm = socialism = evil.

It is all making sense now.

I bet Mr. Dean thinks that it was really McCarthy who was the persecuted one (and that Ike really was a Commie - like the Birchers used to think).

Joe, Adam Smith was far more of a Marxist than you realize (which is really intriguing considering that “Wealth of Nations” was written 70 years before “The Communist Manifesto”!). If you read “Wealth of Nations,” especially Book V, Adam Smith very clearly states that “it is not unreasonable” that the wealthy should pay higher taxes and that all individuals have a vested interest in the upkeep of the state.

Oh, I’m quite familiar with Smith’s views. I know that your comment about Smith being “far more of a Marxist” was tongue-in-cheek. Sadly, there are some who actually view progressive taxation and regulations as being the equivalent of nationalizing of industry (which is what socialism really is).

I further posit that, in the Revolution that led to the founding of this great nation of free individuals, it was the spirit of “Yes We Can!” that held the Continental forces together and (with the help of a little “oui nous pouvons”) produced victory; while the British regulars faced more of a “Yes You Will.” attitude from their monarch bosses, and were unsuccessfully aided by some “okay, sure, how much you offering?” from the Hessians.

The “we” in no way implies forced collectivism. I’m as crabby and anti-social as the next blogger, but what’s wrong with a little teamwork? And how is willingly joining forces with one’s compatriots anything like socialism? Yeesh.

Joe Lance, Obama isn’t talking about teamwork, fighting a war, or even winning a sporting event. You know what he is talking about. All collectivists are not Marxists, but Obama is. He is the most far left candidate the Democrats have ever nominated, more leftwing than McGovern, who by the way, served heroically in combat.

Obama was mentored in Hawaii by Communist Party member Frank Davis, who he affectionately called Frank in his book. He later was involved with communists in college. After moving to Chicago, he befriended Weather Underground commie Bill Ayers. Obama is a big fan of socialist Saul Alinsky. He belonged to the Trinity United Church of Christ for twenty years, a church that taught Black Liberation Theology, also known as Christian Marxism. This isn’t a John Birch member post accusing everybody of being a commie. Its all about Barack Obama, who is not even worthy of being called a modern liberal. He should be called a leftist, not a liberal. Kind of like young Goldni.

Just because you use proper punctuation when making your strange paranoid accusations, Senor Dean, it does not mean you are any less worthy of ridicule and summary dismissal than the Birchers.

Boo! I just saw a pinko collectivist sympathizer.

And did you know Nazi’s were socialists too?

    Yup.

It’s now “affectionate” to call someone by his/her first name? Wow.

If you can point to a specific Obama issue stance that’s Marxist, that’s fine and dandy. It appears that you’re heavily leaning on the “guilt by association” fallacy in lieu of that, though.

    And FYI Senor Dean:

Evolutionarily speaking, we evolved in tribes - NOT individuals in a Hobbsean state of nature. Those who worked best together (through I dunno . . . agriculture, division of labor, etc.) survived to propogate another day. Collective action was the default of necessity.

Those neolithic red-haters probably didn’t do so well.

  12. June 10th, 2008 11:58 am

Considering I heard Rush Limbaugh call the World Trade Organization a “marxist” group yesterday…Glen Dean’s definition is not surprising.

  13. GoldnI writes
    June 10th, 2008 12:05 pm

Christian Marxism…that’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. By definition, it can’t be both. You can’t both subscribe to Christian belief and at the same time say that the abolition of religion will lead to greater happiness among the proletariat (one of the tenets of Marxism). And since Obama has never called for the abolition of religion, or for the nationalization of industry, or for the abolition of private property, or for the violent overthrow of the bourgeoisie, then he doesn’t sound like much of a Marxist.

But I understand Glen. You have to keep hammering this talking point because neither you nor your candidate have anything else to run on.

And by the way, I’m left-handed. Does that further make me a Commie?

Goldni, thats a very clever tactic. Say something ridiculous, then ask me if I believe it. Very good. I’m sure that you were never exposed to any Marxist professors or student groups at that Ivy League school you were fortunate enough to attend (congrats on graduation btw). Noam Chomsky is probably not even considered far left in your mind.

Obama could have a friendship with Satan and Sean and Goldni would still defend him and kiss his ass.

Btw Goldni, McCain is not my candidate. McCain could never convince me to vote for him. Only Barack Obama could convince me to vote for John McCain.

Btw, read up on Black Liberation Theology, which is similar to Liberation Theology. It’s not really about Christianity, but merely using Christianity to promote something else.

    Glen,

Why don’t you actually read Black Liberation Theology rather than “read up on it.” I mean reading instapundit does not count for a thorough reading.

  18. June 10th, 2008 12:46 pm

I just don’t understand the fascination Conservatives have with an over-rated, debunked economist from the 19th century. Karl Marx vs Adam Smith couldn’t be more of an outdated debate in a 21st century economy.

What do you want me to say? I had a conservative professor whom I loved (although he was more of the paleo than the neo variety) and one very liberal professor whom I couldn’t stand (although it had less to do with her ideology and more to do with her teaching style). The socialist groups, to the extent they were there, were more visible among the townies than on campus. I know conservatives have this image of Northeastern schools as Marxist-producing assembly lines, but I think Cornell probably produced more alcoholics than socialists.

And remember, I’m a heathen Jew so I don’t believe in Satan.
