McCain also repeated past criticism of a state Republican Party news release that questioned whether Obama was anti-Semitic and used the Democrat’s middle name, Hussein. He stopped short of directly criticizing a more recent state GOP video on Obama’s wife, Michelle.

Obama and some Republicans, including Corker, have criticized the video. It contrasts Michelle Obama saying she was proud of America “for the first time in my adult life” with Tennessee Republicans talking about their pride in America.

“I oppose any campaign messages that entail a personal attack,” he said. “I also have said I’m not going to be a referee. … I do know Americans are sick and tired of personal attacks impugning the integrity of someone.
