Al Gore, Elder Statesman
Posted on May 29, 2008 at 1:23 pmI thought that Al Gore was more or less out of the game these days. I thought he doesn’t want to get involved with petty politics.
Isn’t his cause now greater than campaigns and partisanship? Base political action, we are told, would sully his image. He wants to work with everyone in the great cause of climate change and getting his hands dirty would hurt that effort.
Now, if that’s the case, if he is now the elder statesman, above the fray, too high and mighty to get involved in putting an end to the Democratic Presidential Primary, then why is he lending his name to the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee so that they may regurgitate their talking points and raise funds under his name and visage.
As a Democratic activist, I’m sure you’ve been watching this year’s campaigns with as much interest as I have. And I’m sure you agree this election is crucial for America’s future.
The simple truth is we must not only win the White House. we must defeat those GOP senators who have done almost as much damage as George Bush or Dick Cheney. They have been enablers for the administration. They have even turned a blind eye to torture and warrantless wiretapping of American citizens.
That’s why I’m asking you to stand with me and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC)-because I believe what they do is so critically important. As the one arm of the Democratic Party charged with electing Democrats to the Senate. their job is crucial to the future of democracy in America.
It was through their good work in 2006 that Democrats regained control of the Senate.
Sadly, we’ve learned since that 51 seats is not enough-because 49 Republicans can stymie the will of the American people through filibusters and maneuvering.
Join me in helping the DSCC put an end to this blockade on American progress with $55, $100 or even $250 or more, Your investment will be put to good use to defeat the most obstinate GOP senators who stand in our way.
Are those the words of an elder statesman?

A) I take it you haven’t read his book “The Assault on Reason”.
B) The elder statesman tag is generally used in reference to his standing within the Democratic party. Just as George HW Bush has campaigned for partisan Republicans, so will Al Gore campaign on behalf of partisan Democrats.
Gore has pledged to stay out of the intra-party primary process, not out of partisan (Dem v. Rep) politics or politics in general.
One of his talking points in almost all interviews when speaking of partisan politics is: “I’m affraid I might have lost my objectivity over…” INSERT TOPIC HERE. It is often followed by a partisan perspective on whatever Republican scandal is raised by the questioner. Gore’s last book speaks in partisan terms of the state of politics in America. Gore will continue to be active and raise money for the Democratic Party.
