Ron Paul’s Primetime Republican Convention Speech

Posted on May 7, 2008 at 8:49 am

Southern Beale notes that not all the interesting development were on the Democratic side in last night’s Presidential primaries. Just like in Pennslyvania, John McCain, the established nominee of the Republican Party failed to get a good chunk of his party’s primary voters:

Anyway, I think this is an issue for the Republicans. McCain has had the Republican nomination sewed up for weeks, and yet a quarter of the Republican voters still aren’t wowed by him? I don’t for a moment think that this 25% could be brought to the Democratic side of the aisle but I do think unless the Republican Party is able to inspire these voters with one of their famous “wedge” issues, a lot of them are going to stay home in November. They’re just not that into him.

This argument that McCain is “in trouble with the base” because he “only” got 75% of the vote in the Republican primary in NC and IN is borderline moronic. First of all, most Republicans didn’t even vote in these primaries because the nomination is sewn up. It’s hardly representative of the base that will turn out in the general.

Second, the voters turning out in large numbers to vote Ron Paul in the Republican primary aren’t traditional Republican voters.

Third, and most striking, in 2000 Bush “only” got 77% of the vote in the TN Republican primary, well after he had the nomination sewn up. If you check the numbers from 2000, McCain was still getting around the same percentage as Huckabee is currently in contests subsequent to the nomination being decided. Just as in 2000 with McCain, Huckabee has a lot of supporters out there in states that don’t vote until late in the primary season. These supporters wanted to vote for their guy, it’s by no means an indicator that McCain is in trouble with his base in the general. Was Bush in trouble with his base in 2000???? Based on how the numbers are being interpreted today, you’d have to say he was. Of course, election day told a much, much different story.

Many might stay home? Don’t count on it. These are motivated voters, people who want to send a message well after the nomination is locked up. Who did most vote for, Mike Huckabee? Obama voted against John Roberts. No, I don’t think many Republicans will stay home in November.
