Harold Ford, Jr. Calls For Democratic Unity Ticket

Posted on May 7, 2008 at 8:08 am

Former Congressman and Senate candidate, Harold Ford, Jr., now chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, suggests that being a “numbers guy” makes him a believer in the formidable nature of a joint Barack Obama/Hillary Clinton ticket. GoldnI translates what Ford is really saying:

“I’m aware that this is pretty much over and that Obama is going to win, but I can’t say that because that would piss off my DLC buddies. On the other hand, I can’t come out for Clinton because that would royally piss off the Memphis base that I need to support me if I ever run for office again. So I’ll just keep pushing for this ‘joint ticket’ so I won’t have to publicly decide.”

Whatever his motivations, Ford has a point. The electoral map may favor Democrats–i.e., several Republicans retiring–but the Electoral College map is another thing. It is going to be very hard for any Democrat to win the White House the way the votes are distributed and with a “winner take all” per state. Despite the antipathy towards her among many Obama fans, she does have an appeal in a few states we need to win and that may tip it in our favor. Obama supporters can afford to swallow their pride and anger in order to achieve his presidency. This is not a football game where our side beats the other guy’s. We are supposed to all be in this together. That is what Obama personifies. Jim Webb is a wonderful guy but he is also very new to politics–Secretary of the Navy is not really a political office– and still not well known. Whatever is done some concession must be made to the Clinton supporters. We cannot afford to write these people off nor should we want to.
