TNGOP Celebrates Winning The Battle While Losing The War

Posted on May 5, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Colby Sledge reports that the Tennessee Republican Party’s Cinco De Mayo press release might not say what they think it says:

There’s some history that the release overlooks: the French summarily crushed Mexico and eventually took the city of Puebla where they were first defeated. France established a short-lived empire in Mexico that was undone, in part, by lagging French support at home and renewed support from the U.S. after the end of the Civil War.

Therefore, Cinco De Mayo really represented a lone victory in an otherwise unsuccessful war against outsiders. That idea, applied to illegal immigration, might be a little more disconcerting for state Republicans.

The TRP saluted the importance of national heritage and the celebration of this significant day in the history of Mexico, and the Tennessean’s political blogger responds by belitting Cinco de Mayo and what it celebrates.

Let’s put Colby Sledge’s comments in context.

The American Revolutionary War victory by the patriots at Lexington and Concord, not long after our Declaration of Independence, was followed by seven years of hard war in which the many battles were lost before the colonies finally win our independence. The fact that some battles were lost does not devalue that initial victory.

Yes, Mexico didn’t win the war at Puebla in 1862, just the battle. But in winning that battle they won the courage to go on, even on past what looked like total defeat.

That’s hardly an achievement deserving of being belittled and dismissed by The Tennessean.
