Thank You, Mr. Helper

Sean Braisted translates Kim McMillan’s explanation as to why she supported a state income tax for Tennessee in 2002, but doesn’t now:

What I think she wants to say is that she supported the income tax because it was the right thing to do, but the voters of Tennessee are such sheep that they really believe a regressive sales tax is better for them. But of course, she can’t say this, so I will.

Neither of you two have met a tax that you did not like

Sean, one of the fastest ways for a Democrat to lose a statewide election is for them to act like some arrogant, smarter-than-the-rubes overeducated elitist “we know what’s best for you” urban liberal. Calling people “sheep” generally doesn’t get them to follow you.

The people of Tennessee may or may not have believed that a sales tax was “better for them,” but they clearly believed that an unconstitutional income tax on top of the existing sales tax was not going to be better for them.

And, in case you forgot civics 101, we are not governed by an elite that gets to determine what is “best” for the people, but rather we are governed by the will of the people. The will of the people in 2002 was for there to be no income tax. Frankly, it doesn’t matter if that means we have a tax code that “experts” think is regressive or unfair or economically unsustainable. The people made their will known loud and clear - NO INCOME TAX.

McMillan voted for it. I suspect Democrats, other than the urban liberal elitists who think they know what’s best for the commonfolk, will reject her excuse, and her gubernatorial candidacy.

Good thing I’m not running for office, and that is why I said “she can’t say this”.

But Hobbs, since you are such a big fan of governing by polls, I will be interested to read your post detailing a full-throated support for the minimum wage.

Personally, I’d rather my elected official be smarter than I am.

As a sheep, according to that lion of brilliant youth, Big Sean Breasted, I’m hearing that hackneyed “regressive, you know, the opposite of progressive, and everyone’s for progress, right” crap for the thousandth time.
