Checking The Code

Posted on April 28, 2008 at 7:31 am

Nashville’s Metro Council considers keeping check cashing stores out of certain neighborhoods:

The original list of prohibited business uses for the area includes pawnshops and adult bookstores. Existing check cashing and related businesses would be grandfathered in.

A text change introduced by Cole would add definitions for the terms “financial institution,” “check cashing,” “pawn shops,” “title loan” and “cash advance” to the zoning code.

“Previously, to outlaw these uses, you’d have to outlaw all financial institutions, and we didn’t want to ban banks and credit unions,” Cole said.

So with the separate definitions in the code, he said, it’s feasible to prohibit cash advance businesses and the like.

Cole said the amendment would improve the aesthetic quality of Gallatin Pike.
