Rob Briley’s Ophelia Ford Moment

Posted on April 22, 2008 at 11:43 am

Kay Brooks is blogging about the Rob Briley/Stacey Campfield brouhaha over letting men out of obligations to their partner’s offspring not of their line. She calls it Briley’s “Ophelia Ford moment”:

For some reason the Democrat ’statesmen’ at the legislature have decided that Campfield is fair game for their petty antics and Briley took full advantage of this culture by threatening to hold the entire committee hostage until Campfield answered Briley’s completely inappropriate questions. The legislature doesn’t need to know how Campfield feels about adult relations. It needs to understand that this an injustice that needs to be corrected.

How Campfield managed to remain calm and professional during this latest personal attack, and the others, is beyond me.

And there is the rub isn’t it? As much as this event is now getting press, how different would this be covered and how different would public perception be if this had happened to anyone but Stacey Campfield?

Would Rep. Bill Dunn have been treated like this if he presented this bill? Jason Mumpower?

But it’s the chickebn & egg. Would anyone but Campfield have presented a bill that so begged for this treatment?

This bill begs for that treatment? Allowing men who did not father children to opt out of financial obligation to pay for children not their own? This is beyond the pale?

Campfield has presented some stuntbaby legislation in his time, but this ain’t it.

You can disagree with him on this, and a surprising amount of people do, but he is in no way out of the bounds of permissible dissent here.

Actually this is a pretty damned good bill. Too bad he’s carrying it, because anything with his name on it is by definition dead on arrival.

I’m glad The Tennessean saw fit to shine a light on this.

Good post RA and good comment Kleinheider. Briley’s a smart guy but came off like a blithering idiot. Campfield ain’t a real smart guy but came off like a reasonable and genuine stateman. I love Campfield. He provokes and he does so in areas that should be discussed and debated.

Briley was totally out of line. The very first thing that was brought up in this questioning was his time in the legislation. You would think as a 10 year statesman, Briley would be have conducted himself in a professional manner. Instead he must resort to childish behavior while attacking a fellow statesman. Representative Briley you are a very intelligent man but a word of advice, do not claim to be a child advocate and then act like that of who you are attempting to protect.

Campfield’s legislation is eminently reasonable. The good news is, next year Briley won’t be in the legislature and Campfield will be.

Having seen the video now I do apologize, I thought this referred to the forced-paternity test issue. I agree that, while I might quibble over details, on balance this issue is reasonable.
