The Clock In Rep. Cooper’s Office Skips 4:20

Excited by the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008, a left-libertarian emails our 5th district Congressman to see what he thought:

Naturally I wrote to our Congressman Jim Cooper and asked him to support this no-brainer of a bill. Naturally, he declined. I couldn’t grok from his response whether he hated freedom, opposed bodily autonomy, or just lacked the integrity to do the right thing. Whatever the case, it’s another appalling black mark on his record.

Which makes me sad, because I basically like the guy. He’s right just often enough to be really frustrating how often he’s wrong. But though he may be one of the least offensive of the “Bush Dogs”, he doesn’t make it easy to defend him.

    Now then, for as progressive a district as TN-05 is, how in the world do they have a Lincoln Davis-lite like Jim Cooper as their congressman? Why hasn’t their been a real primary challenge to him? I know we can’t all have a Steve Cohen, but still…

    Heh. I almost included a paragraph suggesting that if Cohen gets primaried out of Memphis, we’d love to have him here :)

    I’ve been complaining for years that there should have been log-rolling between the gays and the heads on this issue; and I’m glad it was Barney who had the guts finally to take the chance.
